Riga Bicycle Count

Open data platform for analyzing bicycle traffic across Riga. As chairman of Pilsēta cilvēkiem, I lead the volunteer organization behind this — hundreds of people counting cyclists at intersections and bridges every month. I also built the system that turns their fieldwork into data the city can act on.

What It Does

Volunteers across Riga manually count cyclists at key intersections and bridges every month. This platform collects, stores, and visualizes that data — giving the city evidence that cycling infrastructure matters and showing where it's needed most.

The data proved real impact: bicycle counts grew 40% between 2014 and 2018, and after new bike lanes were added on Zemitāna bridge, traffic increased 1.5x. This isn't a hobby project — it's data that shapes urban planning decisions. Pilsēta cilvēkiem is a volunteer organization I chair that advocates for livable cities — organizing events, protests, and projects alongside businesses and other NGOs.

Interactive Dashboard

KPI cards, trend charts, heatmaps, and Leaflet maps with marker clustering showing all counting locations across the city.

Report Builder

Filter by year, demographics (women, men, children), location, direction, and road type. Three aggregation methods: average, sum, percentage.

Data Management

CRUD for counting events, locations, and reports. Bulk upload via Excel for efficient volunteer data entry.

Public API

Key-based API access for external researchers and city planners to query the raw data programmatically.

Demographic Analysis

Tracks gender and age breakdowns — monitoring cycling equality and infrastructure accessibility for all riders.

Open Data

Public access to raw counting records. Transparency by design — anyone can verify, analyze, or build on the data.
